Hydrographic Survey Services

We have been providing bathymetric survey solutions to our clients for the last 40 years and have seen the industry change drastically. We started in the time of hand drawn maps and trisponders and now look forward to the future of hydrographic surveying using the latest GNSS and echo-sounding technologies. We have been involved in dredging campaigns across the UK, Ireland and Europe and have worked closely with all the leading dredging contractors. Among our capabilities are the following:

High Resolution Multibeam

High-Resolution Multibeam is a sonar-based hydrographic mapping technique that uses multiple acoustic beams to capture detailed bathymetric data of the seafloor. It is widely used in marine geology, habitat mapping, and underwater navigation to produce high-precision topographic maps and detect underwater features.

Single beam

Single-beam surveying is a remote sensing technique that uses a single acoustic pulse to measure depth and profile the subsurface in a straight-line path. It is commonly used in hydrographic surveys, sediment mapping, and shallow water studies for basic bathymetric data collection and underwater feature detection.

Side scan sonar

Side-scan sonar is a geophysical method that uses acoustic waves to create detailed images of the seafloor and underwater structures by measuring the intensity of sound reflections. It is widely used in marine archaeology, underwater mapping, and search-and-recovery operations to detect objects, shipwrecks, and seabed features.

Magnetometer

A magnetometer is a geophysical instrument used to measure variations in the Earth’s magnetic field to detect subsurface anomalies. It is widely used in mineral exploration, archaeology, and environmental studies to locate buried objects, geological structures, and magnetic minerals.

River bed surveys, including river velocity

Riverbed surveys, including river velocity measurements, are conducted using hydrographic techniques such as single-beam and multibeam sonar, ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler), and LiDAR to map the riverbed topography and analyze water flow dynamics. These surveys are essential for hydrological studies, sediment transport analysis, flood modeling, and environmental assessments to monitor changes in river morphology and flow patterns.

Near shore reflection seismic surveys

Nearshore reflection seismic surveys are geophysical techniques used to image subsurface structures beneath shallow coastal waters by analyzing reflected seismic waves. These surveys are commonly applied in marine geology, offshore engineering, and environmental studies to map sediment layers, identify faults, and assess seabed stability for infrastructure projects such as ports, pipelines, and wind farms.

Near shore refraction seismic surveys

Nearshore refraction seismic surveys are geophysical techniques used to determine subsurface geological structures in shallow coastal areas by analyzing the travel times of refracted seismic waves. These surveys are commonly used in geotechnical investigations, coastal engineering, and marine geology to map bedrock depth, sediment thickness, and subsurface layering. They are essential for infrastructure projects such as harbors, offshore wind farms, and coastal erosion studies, helping assess seabed stability and material composition.

ADCP and direct style current metering, static and transect style.

ADCP is a hydrographic instrument that measures water velocity profiles using sound waves (Doppler effect). It is widely used in rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters for flow analysis.

Turbidity monitoring, transect and fixed buoy style.

Turbidity monitoring measures the concentration of suspended particles in water, typically using optical or acoustic sensors. It is essential for water quality assessments, sediment transport studies, and environmental monitoring in rivers, lakes, estuaries, and coastal areas.

Tidal recording and tidal prediction.

Tidal recording involves measuring sea level changes over time using tide gauges, while tidal prediction uses historical data and mathematical models to forecast future tide levels for navigation, coastal management, and flood prevention.

Sea bed sampling and sediment analysis to Marine Institute specification.

Seabed sampling and sediment analysis, following Marine Institute specifications, involve collecting and analyzing sediment samples using techniques such as grab samplers, box corers, and vibrocorers to assess grain size, composition, organic content, and contaminants for environmental monitoring, habitat mapping, and marine resource management.

Our Clients Say

WORK WITH US

Sorensen Civil Engineering has used Hydro Survey on many of our marine and land-based projects. Hugh and is team have and continue to provide an excellent service and are extremely professional in their project delivery.

— Brian Snow

Operations Director | Sorensen

We engaged Terra Survey to undertake an extensive geophysical survey of existing flood defences predominantly to the west of Limerick City. We were particularly interested in understanding the depths of any soft soils and the potential presence of karstic features in the bedrock. Terra Survey reviewed our proposed survey and advised on tweaks to optimise the survey to ensure we gathered all of the required information. Terra Survey’s site team undertook the survey promptly in very challenging terrain. The report produced by Terra Survey on completion of the fieldworks was to a very high standard. We were delighted with Terra Surveys inputs to the project and we look forward to working with them again in the near future.
